Sometimes, I do not really believe that I live in the same country as some of these people....
Here it is, 2004, soon to be 2005.... yet I feel like I am living in the - dark ages????
Apparently, there are some (congressmen) x-tian crusaders out there who feel that porn is just as bad as heroin?
I just love this quote:
Brownback, a father of five, said when he was a boy, the typical kid's exposure was limited to occasional peeks at dirty magazines illicitly obtained by a buddy.
Now, he said, pornography seems pervasive. Children run across it while researching homework on the Internet. Vulgar ads arrive unexpectedly by e-mail. Some of his middle-age male friends limit their time alone in hotel rooms to avoid the temptation of graphic pay-per-view movies, Brownback said.
So, the temptation of their imaginations upon their genitals is just too much to resist? If left alone in a hotel room they will immediately, obviously due to the influence of Satan or some other bullshit excuse, grab the remote and order pay-per-view porn? Is this not a completely voluntary exercise?
How have we come to this, as a country? How has the ultra right - who obviously are not responsible for their own actions as everything is a "temptation", and not at all a reflection upon themselves and their own (supressed) desires run rampant - now in such control that they must now seek to eradicate all expression of anything which does not meet their wholly imaginary guidelines as to how a good x-tian is supposed to be living their lives (altar boys notwithstanding)?
Layden called for billboards and bus ads warning people to avoid pornography, strip clubs and prostitutes.
This is good Except the billboards and bus ads would have to show some skin to get people's attention....
Brownback, an outspoken Christian conservative who has championed efforts to curb indecency on television and the Internet, said the public is beginning to realize "they don't just have to take it."
But he acknowledged the First Amendment right to free speech has limited congressional efforts.
This is even better - Damn the first Amendment! It was obviously not meant for people who like to speak their minds, and like to live their lives the way they choose to. It was only meant for those who would legislate their morality onto others, who know what is best for everyone, even if thier own lives are so fucked up due to repressed desires they cannot even watch a football game without getting unduly aroused at a naked back or an errant nipple.
These are people who refuse to acknowledge that they are naked underneath their clothes. Who would rather cover up the boobs of Justice with sackcloth than speak before a statue which used to be considered a work of art.
These are people who are afraid, of many things. But one of the most fearful things to them is a naked woman.
There is a simple answer to all of this. If you do not like what you see - change the channel, or just do not look overlong, or do not pay for pay-per-view. It is a choice.
We all choose what we watch, listen to or order. Just do not do it. If your faith requires that you be strong in the face of temptation then be strong. Do not try to legislate your faults away at others expense.
If you do not believe in abortion, do not have any. But do not attempt to press your "moral values" onto those who do not share them.
in short - we are a rebellious country. America was founded upon that very act. How soon we forget!
We obviously cannot outdo the right in getting or buying votes. So I suggest we do something much easier....
Restore the balance that is built into the system. Vote for the people in the House and the Senate. Push out the Republican majorities and make it so the prez-i-dent actually has to work with the other half of the country.
It is the only way, at this point.
Do not let a margin of a few percentage points become a mandate. It is not. But already the ultra-right is crawling out of the woodwork....
We are a nation of individuals, not an x-tian nation. All of us have opposing views about a great many things. But we are rapidly surpassing the zero-point where those views even get to be heard.
If you think about it, very seriously, the real "terrorists" live very close to home. They would strip away everything in a gloss of morals and righteousness to secure the right for you, to be just like them.
