Are there any here who pray to Azrael?  Is your prayer historical, contemporary, or of your own composition? Has it been effective? Would you care to share the prayer?

Hi, mine isn't to Azrael directly. I pray to God and thank him each night for Azrael's guidance and for the experiences I share with Azrael. Then I thank Azrael directly asking him for further guidance and companionship.
It never is the same prayer each time, so I donot have any set way that I do it.  Amorte!

You know, since I was raised a cat-lick kid, the whole idea of prayer is synonomous with abasement. When I'm in front of my altar, I open myself to Azrael, and just try to BE with Him. Sometimes, though, I use prayers to focus or to help still my mind. I use Leilah's prayers just because I love the beauty of the language, and I especially like the necromantic prayer in Latin! There's something about speaking a language that isn't one's own for pitching you out into ritual space. I'm planning on getting a Tibetan singing bowl, because the deeper ones remind me of tolling bells at the cemetery.    :rose:  rip  :rose:

Hi, So true Russalka.  I feel the beauty of any type of prayer is when it comes from the soul.  I agree with you on the "different language" comment.  I have a language that believe it or not I am unsure what language it is. I came across it while in a visit to the realms once and it has never left me. I've tried to find out what language it is by some people who are very well versed in languages and noone is sure what it is lol. I just feel very at one and like it is symbiotic whenever I speak it.  It just makes me feel really still and at peace inside when I speak it.  So, it is what I use alot in prayer or when I am worshipping. Amorte!

HAIL TO THEE, DEATH ANGEL AZRAEL
THOU WHO STANDS ALONE
BETWEEN MY SELF AND THE THRONE
OF ESSENCE AND CREATION
ENDER OF THE LIVING THINGS
BROUGHT FORTH OUT OF CHAOS
ENDER OF ALL THAT IS HELD AS GOOD
ENDER OF ALL THAT IS HELD AS EVIL
DELIVER ME FROM THAT WHICH MUST BE CHANGED
TO THAT WHICH MUST CONTINUE
CLEAVE MY MORTAL FORM
ACCORDING TO MY MERITS AND
ACCORDING TO MY FAULTS
THAT I MIGHT DRINK FROM THE
RIVER OF FORGETTING
THAT I MIGHT BEGIN ANEW
UNENCUMBERED
SAVE BY MY FATE AND DESTINY
IN THE NAME OF MORS
AVE AZRAEL

That absolutely makes this puppy swoon.  It's a hell of a lot more intense than mine self-dedication to Donn.

I know that this piece is all over our site, but someone asked me to post it here, so here is my "prayer" to Azrael;

In the shadow voice
I speak your name,
Azrael..
through the darkness of the humid night,
it resonates
in cathedral carillions,
tolling, like some great, deep bell
heard for miles afar,
lulled on the swell of the wind,
this symphony,
mighty in sorrow
carried on huge, dark and silent wings,
obliterating all light,
extinguishing every flame
that strives to survive your immense unfurling.

Your name, an attribute, a mortal gift,
a blessing passed through many lips
and given meaning in their prayers.
A word
becomes an invocation
simply by the emotion
imbued in its speaking.
Azrael....
The sirens sing your name
in ways that bring the angels
and the demons to their knees.
They cannot help that they have fallen.
Your name stills the heart,
silences their breath,
culls the flame of longing from their loins.
Azrael.....
the name is Love
and ever fleeting in that kiss,
that eternity could be so quick,
so demonstrative in but a moment
where time does not exist
and forever
becomes the blink of an eye,
yet so much longer
than these days.
We speak your name,
and like them, fall,
weak-kneed into your cold, cold arms
just waiting for that kiss,
however fleeting it may seem,
it is longer than our days
and fuller than our nights
and so much stronger than our dreams profess,
and so much sweeter when Life is willing
to surrender to this song.

:rose:

Cool piece.  I don't have a formalised, ritual prayer.  I just say "Hi, how's it goin'?" and stuff like that, once in a while.  I think He's totally cool, but I don't pester Him, unlike His Irish and Greek counterparts.

Morgan, thank you for your comments--you have made my night.  :rose: yes, i also talk and pray with Azrael according to my present thoughts and aspirations.  however, i felt somewhat obliged to conjure up a formal prayer for this topic site and so last afternoon i did so....
Leilah Lady Death, your prayer to Azrael is beautiful, perceptive, of high intellectual persuasion, and oh, so Necromantic, :rose: something mine is lacking of....to me Azrael is less a Lover and more a Mentor and Protector-- i do not harbor any false beliefs that i have found some kind of
special favor with the Great Dispatcher, i just seem to be upon some wave length or in some current that He has come to recognize.      rip

My prayers to Azrael take the form of narratives.

I remember Edgar Allan Poe, who was falling apart, frightened of the world, of himself, laying on a door then on a hospital bed.
His cynical monster implored that someone blow out his brain.
His spirit cried out "God, help my poor soul!"
And Azrael came to him.

Soldiers were crying out, mortally wounded on the fields of Antietam, choking the Sunken Road.  Their adult lives were beginning or had begun, some with only mothers, some with wives, some with wives and children, and now it was all slipping away with the blood.  I remember the blood staining the fallen corn, the thick-thready grass, the stones, the tracks of the wheels, and the hands that touched profound wounds.
And Azrael came to them, he came to them all.

I see the world as it is, people, their spirits crushed under the weight of poverty or their bodies crushed under the treads of tanks.
Azrael sees it too, and I wish we did better.
Let the world see death as deserving reverence;
Never more as policy, never more as a wind-up key in tiny, warlike minds.

Whenever I hear a story of death, even if that story is one of murder and cruelty, my faith in Azrael is always with me, helping me understand it without bitterness and rage.
Because of my belief in Azrael and the gentleness and love in death, I am more committed than ever to peace and the well-being of others here on earth.
I'm grateful for this understanding, which I believe to be nothing less than a divine gift.
