The Jan./Feb. '02 issue of the highly-recommended art-mag "Juxtapoz", which runs the
gamut from hot-rod and tattoo to Tiki and H. R. Giger, has a treat for the skeleton-lovers
among us. "Life After Death: Linda Bark'karie's Buckaroos and Bones" tells the story of
this successful traditional "western" artist, who, fascinated with Mexico's Day of the Dead,
started painting skeletons: defleshed humans and animals in pleasant settings, images of
"San Jose: Patron de Muerte Feliz" (patron saint of happy death). "Guadalupe de los
Muertos" (...of the Dead) features the beloved icon praying, a Mexican cowboy rides a
bucking bronco...all in bare bone. Bark'karie pays homage to Day of the Dead traditions in
her paintings, placing the "flowers of the dead", marigolds, in her canvases, adding 3-D
elements as in Mexican dioramas. Bark'karie says, "I can't deny that stripped of sexual
identity and flesh, which has some absurd connotations, we become just the essence of who
we are: souls." When preparing to paint the Virgin of Guadalupe in skeletal form, "she
traveled to her favorite mission in San Miguel, because she thought it might be prudent to
light a candle. When she got there, she announced her plans to the Virgin and said, 'If, by
any chance, you find this disrespectful, give me a boil on my ass.'...to this day, there are no
boils in sight." Many Catholics have given her crap ( "How can you do this to the Virgin?"
), but never any Mexicans. Check out her art at http://www.buckaroosandbones.com.
(Netscape can't "find" her site, but Internet Explorer CAN. Sheesh...)

Also worth looking at, though not necromantic in the slightest, is the site of Mark Ryden,
also featured in this "Juxtapoz." Classically painted scenes featuring alchemical and mystic
symbols, strangely solemn child-women, cuts of meat, Abraham Lincoln, tacky infant's
toys, combined to become figures of a bizarre mythology. Amazing. Behold his work at

I'd tested the buckaroo site address, and could not get through again. Emailed Linda Bark'karie, who wrote "...I don't know what the
problem is, it seems to go through identity crisis every now and
then. Damn good thing I don't rely on it for a living. An
alternate place to see some works is www.skeletonart.com, go to
the gallery section then my name..."

DO check out skeletonart.com, a neat site with a gallery section, t-shirts and caps with "Skeletubbies", Posada (Mexico's premier "Day of the Dead" artist), and Bark'karie art...

I love the site! I am checking out to see if the Starbones Coffin tee-shirt comes in a coffee mug, as these people up here in Seattle are nuts over coffee!
