A Dream Within A Dream Within A Dream. . .I Think

It was nice.  After a lifetime apart, we were together again.  You, who were destined to be at my side over an empty court.  We held each other as tight as we could, but we still couldn't be close enough.  But a dream it was.

I awoke, and it was freezin'.  The fire was out, and my sheet and solitary blanket did nothing for me.  I relit the fire, and put on some water for tay.  I was in the ruins of an old hunter's cabin.  I dressed, as my tay steeped.  When I finished, I had some to warm me up, then stepped outside in the frigid morn'.

I walked forward to the road, then walked down that road to the bridge.  The bridge that went over the horizon line, and seemed to go on forever.  I looked down it.  It was empty.

Somewhere on the other side of that bridge, you were.  Somewhere far away, and out of sight. Last I knew, you were lookin' for it.  I wondered if you'd found it yet.  If you were walkin' across it now, or if you were still lost, and how close you were to findin' the path that would lead to me if you were still lookin'.

I was waitin'.  I'd been waitin' a long, lonely time.  After you find me, we'll get out of here.  We'll go to my real home, as opposed to this desolate shack that's there for who ever comes by.  I had tears in my eyes from missin' you as. . .I woke up again.

But you were there!  In front of me.  I was wrapped around you, and one who had been with me for so long was wrapped around me.  The one behind me stroked my hair, and told me everything was goin' to be all right.  He started to make me forget everything.  What little I still knew of my past, my thoughts of the future, and even myself.  The one in my arms turned around, and helped him take me out of myself.  They worked in ways that few dare, and fewer still will admit to.

Things happened then, that couldn't be done.  Not here, anyway.  Not in this place, or this life. Delectable things that defied reality.  I knew I would awake again, but to what?  At the time, I didn't care.  I couldn't.

But now that it's over, I dread the inevitable; though I have no idea when this dream will end, end it will.  It didn't seem like a dream, but it HAD to be.  That, or I'd gone insane.  It's not that the walls had melted, or the furniture was talkin' to me, but what I'd just been through had made no sense. The world didn't work like my experience, and it made me afraid.  So afraid. . .to lose it.

Apex

How treasured
To lock eyes, and spontaneously break out in laughter,
To come home, expect an odious task, and find it already done,
To come to the table and finding a gourmet meal on it, cooked with you in mind,
Have the tay steeping when you come to the kitchen,
A random embrace,
To be held in such interest that every nanometre of you must be gone over several times a week with a feather's touch,
To have a life lived for you in order to help you accomplish what you can't do alone,
To never be left hanging in any way, shape or form,
To find a poem on your pillow,
To know you are free to do as you choose with no consequence (not that you would injure anything),
To come home to find your new portrait on the wall,
To be led to places where no one has gone before,
To have someone always there for you,
To be given the chance to give it all back.

I'd walked this street so many times, barely aware of the narrow path I passed, every time I'd passed it.  I hadn't even thought about it, but now I wondered where it led.  It was between two fences, and it wasn't very long.  There was an open gate at the other end.  Now I would go down it.

It led to a dirt road that had apple trees, walnut trees, plum trees, bramble berries, and all kinds of flowers beside it.  There was a field beyond the trees, and I couldn't see the end of the dirt road, for it turned into the hills.

This was a paradise I never knew was here.  I walked down the road, and parts of it were covered by a tunnel of tree branches, giving respite from the late summer sun.  I picked an apple, as I continued walking, and it was pretty good.  Tree ripened fruit was the best, and I'd have to come back later to get some for home.

I didn't even finish the apple, as I walked around the bend, and had to stop.

There was an open, white marble temple with many pots of different flowers in a clearing where the hill was indented.  The flowers were all in perfect condition, with unmarred petals and leaves.  I didn't recognise any of them, but they were colourful and beautiful.  There was an altar, and it was bare.

I sat on the altar, and became aware it was quiet.  I heard no noise from traffic, or anything else.  I hadn't covered much distance, but it was like I was in a different world.  I wish I'd explored the path earlier, but I'd always been too preoccupied.  This was a paradise that I don't think I'd talk about.

I'd come back more often.  It wasn't far from home.  One day I would stay here, and never return.

You are in the land of the fallen, but you no longer belong here.  The door to the other place is before you.

Do you stay, or do you go.  No one wants you to go, but you've been here too long, and remaining is a personal liability.

You knock.  You hear footsteps, but the door remains closed.

You knock again.  You hear a knock from the otherside of the door.

You try to open it.  It is locked.

You hear keys jangling, and you put your right hand on the lever.  You can almost feel the key go in on the otherside.

Yet the door remains locked.

For how much longer?

Thanks.  Feel free to add to the thread.  Anything  goes in this one, in any format.  So far I'm the only one who's put anything in it, and I'm waiting for someone else to flow in.
